A sexually selected signal may serve a dual function being bothattractive to mates and deterring rivals. Presently, there arefew unambiguous demonstrations of an ornament functioning inboth a mate choice and mate competition context and none regardingfemale ornaments. We have shown earlier that a temporary ornament,a striped pattern, in a sex-role reversed female pipefish, Syngnathustyphle, attracts males. Here we show that this ornament alsointimidates rival females: in one experiment a male could interactwith either 1 or 2 females. Latency until copulation was longerwhen 2, rather than 1, females were present. Moreover, when2 females were present, competition lasted longer and time untilmating took place increased when females displayed their ornamentsmore equally. In another experiment, a focal female could see1 stimulus female and 1 stimulus male, the latter 2 being unawareof each other. The ornament of the stimulus female was manipulated, either strengthened by being painted black or left unalteredby being sham-painted. As a result, focal females experiencingblack-painted stimulus females decreased courtship as well ascompetitive activities compared with focal females seeing sham-paintedfemales. Moreover, focal females seeing black-painted femalesdisplayed less of their own ornament compared with controls. This decrease was due to a decrease in display toward malesrather than to stimulus females. Thus, this female ornamentindeed has a dual function, attracting mates and deterring rivals. In addition, the social costs invoked by this intimidating effecton rivals may help to maintain signal honesty.  相似文献

Individual recognition (IR) requires individuals to uniquely identify their social partners based on phenotypic variation. Because IR is so specific, distinctive phenotypes that stand out from the crowd facilitate efficient recognition. Over time, the benefits of unique appearances are predicted to produce a correlation between IR and phenotypic variation. Here, we test whether there is an association between elevated phenotypic polymorphism and IR in paper wasps. Previous work has shown that Polistes fuscatus use variable colour patterns for IR. We test whether two less variable wasp species, Polistes dominulus and Polistes metricus, are capable of IR. As predicted, neither species is capable of IR, suggesting that highly variable colour patterns are confined to Polistes species with IR. This association suggests that elevated phenotypic variation in taxa with IR may be the result of selection for identity signals rather than neutral processes. Given that IR is widespread among social taxa, selection for identity signalling may be an underappreciated mechanism for the origin and maintenance of polymorphism.  相似文献

Since ever infectious diseases have been a major hazard for the armed forces in operations. Nowadays our nations are facing the threat of terrorism, including bioterrorism. This threat is much more related to the potential disorganization of the society than to the lethal effects of the agents. Biological weapons are considered more like terror weapons than like mass destruction weapons, hence the importance of preparing specific defence measures. The know-how acquired from the struggle against natural infectious diseases is a useful help to face the biological weapon threats and risks. Likewise, the defence attitude is based on three pillars: anticipating, managing, and restoring. This military as well as civilian defence attitude applies to six important functions: (1) alert, (2) detection, diagnosis and identification, (3) medical countermeasures (drugs, vaccines and sera), (4) medical care in hospital, (5) training and information, (6) research and development of dedicated technologies.  相似文献

Male stag beetles (Lucanidae) use their extremely elongated jaws to pinch their rivals forcefully in male–male battles. The morphology of these jaws has to be a compromise between robustness (to withstand the bite forces), length and weight. Cyclommatus metallifer stag beetles circumvent this trade-off by reducing their bite force when biting with their slender jaw tips. Here we describe the functional mechanism behind the force modulation behaviour. Scanning Electron Microscopy and micro CT imaging show large numbers of small sensors in the jaw cuticle. We find a strong correlation between the distribution of these sensors and that of the material stress in the same jaw region during biting. The jaw sensors are mechanoreceptors with a small protrusion that barely protrudes above the undulating jaw surface. The sensors stimulate dendrites that extend from the neuronal cell body through the entire thickness of the jaw exoskeleton towards the sensors at the external surface. They form a sensory field that functions in a feedback mechanism to control the bite muscle force. This negative feedback mechanism enabled the stag beetles to evolve massive bite muscles without risking overloading their valuable jaws.  相似文献

Nocturnal species may communicate by visual signals more frequentlythan previously thought. In fact, such species are habituallyactive around sunset and sunrise, when light conditions arestill suitable for visual communication. We investigated thecommunication function of a visual cue in the eagle owl Bubobubo, a nocturnal predator. In this species, territorial andcourtship displays peak during the sunset and sunrise periodsand involve the display of a white badge located on the throatwhose reflectance properties are sex and period dependent. Experimentalintrusions were conducted at 30 eagle owl territories in orderto understand the function of the white badge during contests. We analyzed the reactions of both male and female owners towarda taxidermic mount with a normal brightness and a brightness-reducedwhite badge, with both male and female territorial calls. Ourresults indicate that the white badge of eagle owls plays animportant role in visual communication during contests. Malesdisplayed more frequently toward male low-brightness mounts, which were also approached more closely or attacked. Femalebehavior did not differ between experimental groups. Furthermore,a positive relationship between male badge brightness and breedingoutput suggested a potential role of the white badge as an honestsignal of male quality. The need to convey information by visualcommunication in a nocturnal species may have promoted the evolutionof visual signals employed at crepuscule.  相似文献

The black throat patch or bib of male house sparrows, Passerdomesticus, is often referred to as a "badge of status" or a"badge" because previous studies have shown bib size to be correlatedwith the social status of males. Yet, little is known abouthow strong and robust this relationship is and how the strengthof this relationship compares with that of other associations. We conducted a meta-analysis for 6 well-studied correlates ofbib size: fighting ability, parental ability (egg incubationand food provisioning), age, body condition, cuckoldry, andreproductive success. We introduce a flexible meta-analysismethod in this study that is better suited in the biologicalsciences than the methods usually employed in popular meta-analysissoftware because our method accounts for a common form of nonindependenceof the data. The relationship between fighting ability and bibsize was found to be strong and robust, and the relationshipbetween age and bib size was moderate and robust. Also, bodycondition was weakly but significantly correlated with badgesize. The other parameters showed nonsignificant small effectsand/or large confidence intervals. Therefore, we conclude thatbib size signals dominance and to a lesser extent age and possiblyreflects body condition in house sparrows. There was weak evidencethat bib size is currently under sexual selection because therewas little association between reproductive success and bibsize. This is surprising as the bib size probably affects theoutcome of male–male competition. Empirical data on sparrowbib size could not be reconciled with sexual selection theory, although there is ample evidence that it is a condition-dependenttrait.  相似文献

Intrasexual competition for reproduction is thought to be an important factor in the evolution of ornaments and weapons in males. However, the evolution of morphologically similar traits in females is often explained through other mechanisms, and the role of intrasexual competition in female trait elaboration has received little attention. Here, we explore the factors associated with female trait elaboration in the cooperatively breeding Pukeko (the New Zealand race of the Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus) by comparing sexual dimorphism in an ornament across two populations. Importantly, the two populations considered differ in several social factors that could affect the degree of female–female competition, and could thereby produce differential selection on elaborate female traits. Recent studies have suggested that high reproductive skew (i.e. monopolization of reproduction by dominant individuals) could influence the intensity of intrasexual competition and select for female elaboration. However, we found that sexual dimorphism was diminished and Pukeko females had more elaborate ornaments under conditions of low reproductive skew. We discuss alternative factors that could influence the degree of female–female competition, and show that reproductive skew may not always provide an accurate estimate of the scope for intrasexual competition.  相似文献
